Lodging is often the biggest line on a friends’ trip — and the most common argument. Splitting an Airbnb or vacation rental fairly works when you set rules before booking and do not forget fees.
What belongs on the “Airbnb bill”
- Nightly rate / total rent
- Cleaning fee and service fee
- Deposit (usually returned, but one person floats the cash)
- Extra-guest fees
- City / tourist tax where applicable
- Optional: parking, early check-in, on-site cleaning
Everything on the booking confirmation should enter the same split. Private snacks only for you should not.
Method 1: per person (simplest)
Total ÷ headcount. Fair when comfort is similar (similar beds, no “suite vs sofa”).
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| 5 nights lodging | €900 |
| Cleaning + service | €150 |
| City tax | €50 |
| Total | €1,100 |
| ÷ 5 people | €220 each |
Method 2: by room / bed
If someone has the ensuite double and two others share a sofa bed, per-head can feel unfair. Weight the shares:
| Person | Sleeping spot | Weight | Share of €1,100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| A + B (couple) | Double room | 2.4 (1.2 each) | €440 (€220 each) |
| C | Private room | 1.2 | €220 |
| D | Sofa | 0.8 | €147 |
| E | Sofa | 0.8 | €147 |
Weights are negotiable — what matters is agreement before check-in. More: equal vs unequal splitting.
Method 3: by nights (staggered arrivals)
If someone arrives two days late or leaves early, do not charge a full share.
Formula: (person-nights ÷ sum of person-nights) × total lodging cost.
| Person | Nights | Person-nights | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maya | 5 | 5 | €275 |
| Noah | 5 | 5 | €275 |
| Olivia | 3 | 3 | €165 |
| Paul | 5 | 5 | €275 |
| Total | 18 | €990 (example total) |
Who books and how reimbursement works
Usually one person pays the platform. Others reimburse — see when one person pays for everyone. Tips:
- Log deposit and final payment separately if timed apart
- Assign the deposit to the payer; mark the refund later as a payment received
- Share cancellation fees if the group canceled together
Shared extras in the apartment
Beyond rent: groceries, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, Uber to the apartment. Track them in the same split — e.g. with the Group Trip Expense Calculator or /new-split.

FAQ
Does a couple pay twice?
For two people, yes — unless you agree room rates (e.g. couple pays 1.5 shares for the double). Decide before booking.
What about tipping the cleaner / host?
If the group wants it: treat it like cleaning and split.
Airbnb vs hotel — same split?
Same logic. Hotels often have clearer per-room prices; Airbnbs more often need room-quality weights.
Bottom line
Fair Airbnb splits: capture total including fees, pick a rule (head, room, nights), reimburse the booker. With the Group Expense Calculator or Ausgabenrechner, lodging stays the biggest cost — not the biggest stress.
